SUMMARY OF THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN ARUBA
Preschool education: Age group 0 -3. Mostly Private/
commercial, some community centers and employers.
Per-Primary level: Admission criterion: Age (4)
Pre-primary (Kindergarten) Education (KO): Age group 4-5.
Course duration: 2 years, not compulsory. Government and
private, government aided schools, all subsidized by the same
standards.
Pre-primary Special Education: for the severely
mentally retarded. (Pasadia Bibitopin)
Primary Level: Admission Criteria: Age (6)
Primary Education (BO): Age 6-11.
Course duration: 6 years, not compulsory. Government and
private, government aided schools, all subsidized by the same
stadards.
Special Education (BuO): For the mentally retarded,
mildly (MLK-schools) and severely (ZMLK-schools), and the
hearing impaired.
Private, not government aided Pre-primary education:
International School of Aruba (ISA): Private US-Type (pre)
Kindergarten and Primary school.
Faith Revival Center (FRC): Private Kindergarten and primary
school of an evangelical congregation.
De Schakel (CombinA): Private Dutch -type Kindergarten and
primary school.
Secondary Level (VO): Selection at 11+, competitive.
General Secondary Education (AVO).
VWO: Course duration: 6 Years. Academically oriented,
preparatory to higher education at universities (WO)
HAVO (Senior High): Course duration: 5 years. Academically
oriented, preparatory to higher level professional education
(HBO).
MAVO (Junio High): Course duration: 4 years. Academically
oriented, preparatory to middle level professional education (MBO).
Vocationally Oriented Secondary Education (LBO)
EPB: Integrated technical and vocational education with
basiscyclus:
Academically oriented first cycle (2 years)
Beroeps cyclus: Vocationally oriented upper division (2 years)
Technical Education (T), Administrative Education (A&E), Human
Service Education (V), Aspirant Opleiding: special education
track (3 years)
Private not government-aided secondary education:
International School of Aruba (ISA): Private US Type high
school;
Universidad di Aruba (Brown School): private US Type high
school and GED preparatory courses. Some college level and
adult education programs.
Post Secondary and Higher level: Competitive admission
Middle level professional education (MBO)
EPI: Community College. Course duration: 2-4 years. Admission
requirements: MAVO or EPB (Doorstroom)
Engineering Technology (T)
Human Services (S&S)
Hospitality Management (H)
Business Administration & Secretarial science (E)
Various part-time specialized training courses, government and
private/commercial.
Higher level professional education (HBO):
IPA: Teacher training. Admission requirement: HAVO. Course
duration 4 years.
Various part-time specialized training courses, gouvernment
and private/commercial.
University Level Education (WO):
University of Aruba (UA): (1) School of Law. Admission
requirement: VWO. Course duration: 4 years.
(2) School of Business Administration. Admission requirement:
HAVO.

Adult Education: Academically oriented, vocationally
oriented and developmental adult education programs:
